DIN 11864
Introduced in 1998, DIN 11864 comprises both short and long versions adhering to the same standard. However, in 2006, this standard underwent a division: the long version retained the DIN 11864 denomination while the short version was designated DIN 11853. Primarily designed for the aseptic and pharmaceutical sectors, these joints stand as the epitome of sanitary couplings in contemporary industries. Their sealing mechanism ensures a seamless fit without any dead space between the coupling components and the seal. Moreover, the extended welding ends of DIN 11864 couplings render them exceptionally compatible with orbital welding techniques.
DIN11864 describes the technical specifications regarding the different
connection forms. There are 3 versions that vary in the way of connecting.
The sealing (o-ring) is for all 3 forms te same. In addition, the standard
also divided in 3 different sizes. Serie A from this standard corresponds to
the sizes in EN10357 series A.
Type 1 is a screw connection where the connection is made by means of
a union nut
Type 2 is a flange connection and is connected by means of nuts and bolts
Type 3 is a clampverbinding where the ferrules are connected with a clamp
For each type one can choose for a possible finish and material type. According to the standard it is possible to choose 1.4404 or 1.4435. Stainless steel 1.4435 is also possible with a low Δ Ferrite content.
Unlike DIN11853, DIN11864 always has long weld ends (orbital weld able) and is actually intended for the pharmaceutical range DIN11866 series (tube), DIN11865 (fittings) and DIN11864. Of course this range is also extremely suitable for the increasingly stringent hygienic requirements in the food industry.
SKS has its standard package compiled from the most common designs. (material/internal finish) H3: Ra <0,8 μm, standard W.St. 1.4404 optional 1.4435 available
H4: Ra <0,4 μm, standard W.St. 1.4404 optional 1.4435 available
HE5 Ra <0,25μm default 1.4435, E-polish

Sealing Principles
Within the realm of DIN 11864 couplings, there exist two distinct sealing principles denoted as A and B. The prevalent sealing form, A, employs an O-ring configuration for sealing. Conversely, sealing form B, termed 'formdichtung' in the standard, adopts a square shape. However, type B is relatively uncommon and challenging to procure in practical applications. O-rings, vital components of sealing form A, are available in EPDM, FKM, VMQ, and HNBR variants, with options for FDA or EC1935/2004 certification.

Components of a DIN 11864 Coupling
According to the standard, various components must bear clear markings to ensure proper identification:
- Tube Size: Indicating the DN size and measuring the pipe size.
- Standards: Denoting compliance with DIN 11864-1, DIN 11864-2, or DIN 11864-3.
- Material: Specifying the material composition, which may include 1.4404, 1.4435, 1.4301, or 1.4307. - Heat Number: A unique identifier offering insights into the product's origin.
Standard Compliance and Protection
By default, a DIN 11864 coupling adheres to hygiene class H3 standards. This classification translates to an Ra value of 0.8μm internally and 1.6μm externally. Furthermore, all couplings are shielded with end caps and individually wrapped in plastic film for added protection.
